The High Cost of Not Having an Online Marketing Strategy
B2B and industrial companies are slow to embrace online marketing. It’s a curious reluctance given that online marketing is performance-driven, pays for itself, and consistently delivers new, qualified business that can mean dramatic increases in sales and growth.
So, why are some companies sometimes reticent about using online marketing when the benefits in terms of exposure and revenue are so substantial? We thought we’d seek out those with the answers.
Direct From the Source
We talked to CEOs and Marketing Managers of companies that have embraced online marketing. These industry leaders are quick to confirm that Internet marketing more than pays for itself. In addition, in a short period of time online marketing has become a critical, indispensable channel for generating customer awareness and sales directly enhancing the bottom line.
The message from industry insiders clear: The risk involved with online marketing is small. The rewards are infinite.
We asked a number of your B2B colleagues what it would have cost them to delay embracing the power of online marketing. This is what they had to say.
Lost Business
Experts agree that online search has become the primary source of information for those making B2B buying decisions. Most business consumers first turn to a search engine during the investigation phase of their buying process, and just about all of them will use the Internet at some point during the decision-making process. That’s right. Nearly all of them.
That’s a staggering fact, and those who have taken advantage of online marketing know this trend is some of the best news in decades for companies willing to exploit the new ways businesses do business.
The reliance on search in the buying process means your company has never had a better opportunity to reach and capture new business. But it also means that every day you wait means business lost to your competitors.
Online Marketing Pays for Itself
Industry pros understand the bottom line and the need for measurable returns on any investment, especially when it comes to spends for advertising and marketing. They also understand that online marketing is one of the few methods guaranteed to pay for itself.
Online marketing, specifically paid placement and search engine optimization, have a proven track record in giving companies the highest returns of any vehicle in their marketing mix.
In addition, online marketing is a low-risk proposition because it’s based on performance. You pay only if a potential customer clicks on your ad. Utilizing that system, the cost of acquiring a customer is dramatically reduced.
Those in the know insist online marketing generates 20-50% of the qualified sales leads in industries that have traditionally relied on sales prospecting, word-of-mouth and trade shows.
The numbers don’t lie. What is your company waiting for?
Competition
Everyone wants a competitive advantage, but even tried and tested methods can’t keep pace with the monumental strides being made with online marketing.
With online marketing, you can fend off your competitors and dominate niche markets. The Internet creates a level playing field where businesses of all sizes can compete. Anyone can stake a position as a leader. What would it be worth to your company to be in that position?
And here’s another insight we heard from B2B pros. One of the unique benefits of the Internet is that is affords smaller businesses the chance to appear bigger than they are. Online, a three-person operation can look slicker than an international conglomerate. You can turn this to your advantage with a minimal investment of time and money. Indextree can show you the way.
So, why is it important to dive into the world of online marketing now? The hard fact we hear from B2Bs is that once a company entrenches itself in a certain arena online, it’s hard to dislodge it. At the moment, in most industries, search rankings and market dominance aren’t set yet. They will be, and it will cost you more down the road to accomplish what you can accomplish now with far fewer resources.
As in most areas of business, in the realm of online marketing, it pays to act decisively..
Online Buyers are Ready to Buy
Those who have reaped the rewards of online marketing will attest to the fact that customers who research and compare products and services online are much more predisposed to buying. It’s just the nature of the medium. Much of your job of selling is done by the time someone reaches your Web site.
In the world of online marketing, your customer is already looking for your product. They’re actively looking to do business with someone. That someone should be you.
New competitors
It’s not something you like to think about, but they’re out there, and they’re after your business. New players are entering your market every day, and they’re capturing your market share.
The tools we’re talking about are a double-edged sword. If you don’t capitalize on the benefits of online marketing, do you think your competitors will hesitate to do so? Aggressive, upstart companies are pulling out all the stops, exploiting economies of scale and using online marketing to extend their reach.
Don’t just wait and watch while these companies erode the fiscal health of your company. Can you really afford to have these competitors encroach on what you’ve fought so hard to build? It’s time to reclaim what’s yours, and online marketing is the answer.
Commoditization
Trust us, we don’t just throw around big words because it makes us feel smart. The Internet has given customers an unprecedented ability to shop and compare, often reducing the buying decision to price alone. But this “commoditization” of products doesn’t do your company justice, and your bottom line may already be suffering because of it.
What’s the answer to the problem of commoditization? How do you distinguish yourself? How do you communicate your differentiating qualities to potential customers?
Online marketing provides an excellent vehicle for branding and also allows you to capture potential customers earlier in the buying process.
Quality business interactions are more than just a price point. Be heard. Stand out. Reap the windfall.
Build Buyer Awareness and Drive Traffic
Here’s the ugly truth. Many manufacturers and distributors don’t do a great job with their Web sites. We hear this time and time again not only from the CEOs and Marketing Managers, but also from consumers.
Site visitors are often frustrated by poor online marketing practices. In fact, studies show two-thirds of B2B site visitors complain they don’t find what they are looking for, and almost half never return to the site as a result. Now, we’re not saying yours is one of those sites. But are you sure you’re turning Web site traffic into sales consistently? What impression are you giving potential customers when they visit your site? Are your customers telling other potential customers how professional and easy-to-use your site is?
Online marketing has a lot more to do than simply having a visually appealing Web site. It’s more than simply buying keywords and hoping they’ll bring you more business. Buying unqualified leads from unknown sources is often like putting your money into a kiln.
Effective online marketing requires knowledge, strategy, implementation, monitoring, and follow-through. Those are the skills and qualities we pride ourselves on at Indextree.
The High Cost of Waiting on the Sidelines
As you read this, there’s a good chance your competitors are working on their online marketing strategies. It’s even possible they’re making inroads into capturing key customer segments you may never be able to recapture.
Is business good right now? Sure. Is it great? Could be better. With an effective online marketing strategy, it could be great.
So, what’s it costing you to wait?
Take it from those who have seen the benefits of online marketing firsthand. Standing on the sidelines has never been so costly.

Ned the Newbie Will Be Adding Niche Marketing To His Business If He Can Just Figure It Out
I was out trying to help our local boat shop owner meet his quota for bass boat sales when I ran into my friend Ned the Newbie, well his real name is Gary but he is really interested in online marketing and has been learning a little more each time we meet. He also reminds of Ned from the Simpson’s cartoon because he is so bubbly and eager to please.
So I stopped drooling long enough to say hello and to see how his Internet marketing strategies research was doing since we last met. As usual Ned was all excited about something and wouldn’t let me get a word out before he was asking questions.
Ned is trying to learn so much about Internet marketing that he is getting himself confused and frustrated, but he is determined to earn a living from the Internet. He just needs to learn to slow down, take baby steps and maybe even relax a bit. But that wouldn’t be Ned, would it.
The question on the tip of Ned’s tongue was “What is Niche Marketing and can I make more money with it than I can with Internet marketing?”
This wasn’t a question I was going to answer right there so I invited Ned back to my office where I would be able to show him examples plus I was a little distracted by the boats and I don’t like being distracted from business and Ned was fine with that.
Ned was waiting for me when I arrived back home, and as usual before I could even say hello he was asking questions. Although his first question was to ask if I had purchased the bass boat I was drooling over.
Once we settled in I opened my browser, handed Ned my keyboard, along with a note pad and pen, then asked him to go to Google.com and search for: “what is niche marketing?”, using the quotes in this case. After only 2 seconds Ned had the following definitions.
Definitions of Niche Marketing on the Web (from Google.com):
Niche marketing is the process of finding small but potentially profitable market segments and designing custom-made products for them. Niche marketers are often reliant on the loyalty business model to maintain a profitable volume of sales.
en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Niche_marketing
Ned’s face was a little red as he admitted how easy it was to find that answer to what niche marketing is.
Learning how to use a search engine to find, or better yet, research market themes and topics is extremely important to any online business, so take the time to read the Advanced Serch Help for the search engines you use.
Because I am so fanatical about fishing let’s look at fishing as the keyword for our market study.
Use Google.com to search for results on the keyword fishing. How many did you find? 100 million, okay I would say fishing might just be a little too general, so let’s be more specific by looking up “bass fishing”.
Be sure to use the quotation marks so that you are finding results that have ‘bass fishing’ as a phrase, rather that two words any where on the page. That can be important for contextual reasons.
That narrowed our search from 100 million to just 3 million. Okay, that is still a lot of pages out there competing for that phrase, but don’t give up quite yet.
How about getting a localized a bit. Let’s add our local area into the search criteria. This time use a plus sign before the quotes that hold New Brunswick. You search text should look like:
“bass fishing” +”New Brunswick”
Now you have narrowed your market down until you are only competing with 40,000 pages. That is a little more do-able at this point in your marketing experience. After you have your foot in the fishing market door for your niche and you have started earning an income, you can start moving into other niches within the general fishing market to generate more sources of income.
Let’s take a few minutes and use a couple of research tools that will help you understand Niche marketing a little better.
Two very useful tools are http://inventory.overture.com/d/searchinventory/suggestion/ and https://adwords.google.com/select/main?cmd=KeywordSandbox. These tools are really made for paid search engine campaigns, but they will give you an idea of the best keywords and phrases that make for a good niche market.
http://www.goodkeywords.com/ – You could also try a freeware Good KeyWords, which can be downloaded by clicking the link, to choose targeted keywords.
http://our.affiliatetracking.net/wordtracker/a/14875 – I recommend WordTracker’s database of terms that are actually used on the major search engines and is the most complete and dependable keyword phrases suggestion tool. WordTracker draws their information from most of the major search engines.
Let’s take a look at the Overture Suggestion Tool and see how many requests there are for these phrases. It is kind of important to have enough people that want what you have in order for you to earn a living from your online business.
Start with the keyword ‘fishing’ just like we did when we were using Google.com.
Overture says 280,000 searches were made for this phrase over the past three months. Cool, you could make lots of money there, all you have to do is sail past all those millions of other pages out there trying to compete with this term. So let’s look at the list and see what we can gleen from it.
280730 fishing
34156 fishing trip alaska
22113 fishing lure
113665 fly fishing
32640 fishing trip
21853 fishing gear
108583 archery fishing hunting
31267 fly fishing vacation
19789 alaska fishing
45136 fishing boat
30419 bass fishing
16141 cat fishing
45011 fishing vacation
28874 fishing rods
15814 fishing report
38952 canada fishing
28684 deep sea fishing
14538 trout fishing
37699 alaska salmon fishing
25332 fishing tackle
13961 lake fishing
If we use the same tool and search for ‘bass fishing’ instead of ‘fishing’ we will get a tighter market and one that would be a little easier to break into, although ‘bass fishing’ is still a huge market.
30419 bass fishing
1135 bass fishing striped
700 bass fishing trip
5069 bass fishing home page
911 bass fishing mexico
639 bass fall fishing
2181 bass fishing tip
903 bass fishing smallmouth
592 bass fishing tackle
1839 bass fishing lure
834 bass fishing fly
538 bass fishing free game
1727 bass fishing report
828 bass boat fishing
516 bass fishing pro
1620 bass fishing peacock
816 bass fishing game
468 bass fishing picture
1584 bass fishing florida
762 bass fishing tournament
459 bass fishing technique
Now if you were to use this same tool and specify a location also you would have narrowed your market into an even tighter Niche market. Think about it this way. If you decided to get into Internet marketing and you tried to marketing to everyone you would be so general that you would most likely reach no one, but…
… if you break that ‘far too general’ market of fishing into smaller groups you can be far more focused on your niche market target group and will stand a much better chance of succeeding.

How To Become A Top Internet Marketer
Marketing is not for everyone. Most people desire a sense of stability to their jobs. They want an 8 to 5 job that pays this much all the time.
Marketing on the other hand is for the adventurous. This is because marketing involves a great deal of risk. It also involves a great deal of persuading other to believe in the marketer to buy the product or services he or she hawks. For most people this could be too much of a risk.
But for some people this is a challenge they are willing to undertake. Those that persevere in their vocation make great headway leading to increased success and stability. Good marketers are known to earn much quickly.
But how does one become a successful internet marketer? How does one acquire the skills that these earning machines possess?
Online Marketing as a Job
Online marketers play their trade by making use of tools and techniques on the internet to market products and services. Their job is to come up on the heap of other marketers vying for attention on the internet. If they are able to reach the consumer and or close a sale, they are deemed successful in marketing sense.
What is Top Internet Marketer?
If one is able to direct much traffic and interest in a product, that person is a very good internet marketer. If the person is able to retain customers and create good relationships with them, that is another sign of a good marketer. If the marketer is able to increase the image and reputation of the product or service he or she presents, then he or she is a valuable member of the marketing arm of that company.
How Do They Do It
Hard work pays off big time in this department. Good marketing involves a great deal of studying, observing and imitating. Most successful marketers study successful marketing strategies and find out why these strategies work. They also try to emulate these strategies and try to adapt them to the product or service they promote.
These marketers are observant and quick to note strategies that work and strategies that do not. They also are inclined to note what made a marketing strategy or what made it fail. They also learn much from those that make mistakes. This leads them to avoid making those same mistakes too.
One major aspect of good internet marketing is the ability to predict behavior. Man is built out of his habits. If you can predict the spending habits of a person, you more or less know how to push his buttons to interest him in your product or service.
The good marketer also knows that man is responsive to some keywords. The savvy marketer will then make use of these words to attract buyers to his or her nook.
The successful marketer is engaging and is concerned about the welfare of his or her customers. Being concerned with customers reaps much benefit. For one, the customer, when he or she knows that the marketers they deal with care for them, will repeatedly do business with the company.
The business world is built of relationships. The top internet marketer knows this and uses this knowledge to his or her advantage.
The internet marketer is also patient. He or she has great timing. These people know when to wait for responses or when to push the advantage. They know they should not e pushy, so they wait. They know they should not be complacent so they push. This timing comes with practice.
They also put themselves in the shoes of the customer. This helps them guess how a customer will react to the various strategies marketers employ. They know how customers like to be treated so they treat them so.
Drive!
To become a top internet marketer, one has to take note of the above criteria. He or she must also me driven. Marketing is not for the passive. Sales go to those who search for them. Therefore, make sure your goals are clear and your drive is strong.
If you pay heed to the guidelines here, you may very well find yourself one of the top internet marketers around!

Attraction Marketing Techniques
What Is Attraction Marketing?
Before implementing attraction marketing techniques one must first understand what attraction marketing is. Attraction marketing is the newest model of marketing that is becoming the most effective means of getting targeted traffic to your website, blog, opportunity, product or service. Marketing is sales and attraction marketing is no different. What separates the two is what you are selling. Attraction marketing is selling yourself not your product or service. As a matter of fact, you should not even talk about your product, service, opportunity, etc. until you have built a relationship and trust with your prospect or visitor.
The goal is to position yourself as an expert by providing valuable free information and being a solutions provider. By doing this and (thanks to the internet) your traffic is coming to you rather than the other way around. You have to put yourself in a different mindset and market yourself as a person rather than a business. Talk to your audience rather than at them. Talk to them as if you were friends and not strangers. What information or knowledge do you have that will ease a pain and solve a problem.
Think about what people use Google for. What are they looking for? Answers, information, solutions, ways of simplifying their lives, etc. When your attraction marketing technique shows up on google and they come visit. You have a targeted visitor looking for what you have to offer. This is much better than you chasing people down. They are coming to you asking you for more information and giving you permission to talk to them.
Attraction Marketing Techniques
Now that you have a better understanding of what attraction marketing is we can explore the attraction marketing techniques in more detail. There are many different ways of using attraction marketing to improve traffic. But first you need to find who your target audience is. Young, old, male, female, opportunists, sports oriented, etc., etc.
Attraction Marketing Techniques: Offline
I prefer not to go into a lot of detail on offline methods but I will mention a few. Flyers, business cards, surveys at the market, newspaper ads, and car magnets. Just mentioning these methods brings back nightmares of days past working the old school methods of MLM. I remember my mentor telling me not to go home until I talked to 30 people and never leave the house without wearing the pin. It was just about that time when I started to learn about the attraction marketing techniques and I have not turned back since. Talk about finding a solution for my pain.
Attraction Marketing Techniques: Online
This is where it’s at. The internet is a wonderful thing. It never takes a day off, the store is open 24/7, and it’s open to the entire world. I mentioned earlier about talking to your visitors as if you were friends. This leads me to social networking sites. What a great place to chat and socialize. MySpace, Facebook, YouTube and Twitter are great attraction marketing techniques. A. They will improve your traffic. B. They will help to find your target audience.
In order to get targeted traffic you need to be where the people are and social networking is HUGE. How big is social networking? According to the Alexa rankings YouTube #3, Facebook #4, MySpace #9, hi5 #21, Twitter#55 (and rising steadily).
Twitter: I personally prefer twitter as an attraction marketing technique but use all of the above with the exception of hi5. When I first started using twitter my child obesity websites traffic improved 43% in the first month and it continues to improve on autopilot. The way twitter works is you make tweets ( 140 character conversation tid bits) short but sweet and you can add a link to your product or service. It is not recommended to over promote; after all it is a social site so be social. Attractive. Some people abuse this and send tweets only to promote and send them in mass quantities. It is annoying. What I do in this case is unfollow. If you find someone else’s tweet interesting you can reply personally (direct message) or for all to see (@reply).
The way you get targeted traffic is you have the option to follow fellow twitterers and they you. What I like about twitter is you can use so many different applications to create a marketing blueprint. My 3 favorites are tweetlater, tweetdeck, and twollow. Tweetlater enables you to input keywords related to your niche. They will send you an e-mail with the people on twitter that are talking about your keyword phrases. I wouldn’t be in a rush to follow all of these though. Some people may be having general conversation and not be in your target market. You can also post tweets to be automated for submission at a later time or date.
Twollow is another good attraction marketing technique. Twollow allows you to add keywords related to your target market much like tweetlater except you have the option to autofollow. Again you need to be cautious because it is conversation and not necessarily your target group.
Tweetdeck is a pretty cool application and once you get the hang of it you may find yourself using it exclusively. Tweetdeck organizes everything into columns for easy access. All friends (people you follow and your followers), @reply’s, and direct messages. You can also create new columns to organize your following. For example: Network Marketers, Hobbyists, Nutrition, etc. whatever you like.
Twitter is an awesome attraction marketing technique that will get you targeted traffic and your number of following and followers will grow fast. I recommend using tinyurl or tr.im for shortening your links when you tweet. They will use up too much real estate since you only have 140 characters to work with. Tinyurl is best best because it still shows where your link is coming from as opposed to cloaking. If they don’t like the link then its not a big deal because there are plenty of twitterers in the nest. Tr.im though allows you to track the clicks and also lets you know what countries your clicked are coming from which is useful. Tracking is critical to marketing campaigns.
Attraction marketing techniques using YouTube is not as difficult as some may believe. Knowing that they rank #3 worldwide for all websites means you’ve got to get in on this. Earlier I talked about talking to your audience rather than at them. You have no choice but to talk to them with YouTube. Setting up an account with YouTube is easy. Then all you need is a video camera, tripod or a friend, and start filming. It doesn’t have to be long 5 minutes tops. Be sure you are talking about your keyword for the video and address the pain that you may be able to solve. Be a solutions provider.
YouTube may very well be the best attraction marketing technique that there is because people warm up to seeing a face and hearing the voice. It puts you in the same room as your visitor. I heard about a woman from Oregon who made a video while she was in her car going to the beach and her video got over 7000 hits in a 48 hour period landing her tons of leads and sales. It will take a little practice before you get it right but it doesn’t have to be perfect. Just remember to try to talk clearly and slowly.
Attraction marketing techniques using free ezine directories. Google and Yahoo love articles because it is all about information. They rank them high in the search engines as long as they are keyword focused content articles that talk about the topic. I’ve done articles in the past that have been listed on page #1 in less than 24 hours. Article directories are easy to sign up for just be sure to read the submission guidelines. They all are pretty much the same. The article cannot include affiliate links within the body text and the article must be original content.
EzineArticles is a give and take. The give is in the body text. Give away free information, tips to make someone’s life easier, how to make something, etc. The take is in the resource box. This is where you can send your readers to your opportunity, website, blog, etc. When making your submission you will be asked to list keywords about your article. Three or four is fine. The first keyword should be your main keyword. What your article is about. Be sure to have your main keyword in the title exactly the way it is in the keyword list. Don’t be afraid of using longtail keywords. 3 or 4 word phrases. Your first sentence should have your main keyword within the first 90 characters of the text. The earlier the better. Then have your main keyword sprinkled about the page along with your other keywords. Your main keyword should appear more often but not too much or the search engines will think your trying to spam them.
When writing your article let it flow naturally when using your keywords. If you follow these tips you should have your article listed highly in the search engines. Here’s another tip: If you don’t have a website you can still get content on the web. Squidoo and Hub Pages are good attractive marketing techniques too. I will briefly discuss them next. This is important: When you do make a squid or hub be sure to link your article to that Squid or Hub from the resource box.
Why is this important? Depending on what article directory you use they do have a high page rank. You can check it on your browser if you have Firefox by downloading the add on. The search engines love relevant links to web pages or blogs and the higher the page rank the better. What this does is help your squid or Hub get ranked higher in the search engines. A PR 2 or 3 is good for niche markets. So your article is helping your Squid or Hub and if you repeat this process over and over you will be found often and thus people will get to know you are an expert in your niche because you are found often. Pretty cool.
Another key point about article directories is your articles are available for other webmasters to use on their websites, blogs, newsletters, and ezines. The rule is they can not change the resource box information. So the better the article, the more exposure your article gets and the more targeted traffic you receive to your website or opportunity. My child obesity site gets over 20 visits a day from a blog about healthy cooking. They must like my articles because 12 of them are on their blog.
Attraction marketing techniques using Squidoo and Hub Pages. Getting content on the internet is easy and free using these two sites. The same principle applies for using keywords in your squids or hubs as for your ezine articles. Before you get started I would look at other squids and see what people are doing and how they look. This will help you plan your pages. When you first start to build a squid you will notice on the right hand side of the page a box asking if you want to add more apps. I would start by adding 3 text boxes and I like adding the Digg module. Squidoo does allow anchor links so you can link to your affiliates, blogs, articles, etc. Whenever you finish a text module be sure to click publish. You can always go back and edit. Also if you do have any links be sure to check that they are working. You don’t want broken links. As mentioned earlier link your content ezine to your squid if it is relevant to help improve its traffic.
Other Attraction Marketing Techniques
Other attraction marketing techniques are LinkedIn, Digg, and Craigslist to name a few. LinkedIn has some real good discussion groups that you can join. I recommend Twitter for Business. In your profile you will have links to your site or opportunity and this is targeted traffic.
Digg is another good one. Of course your information about your business will be in your profile for all to see. Its a good idea to keep somewhat active with your diggs. If you find a web page, article, or news flash that is interesting just copy the link from your browser, log into your Digg account and click submit new. Perhaps you find this article interesting. The attraction marketing technique with Digg is in your friends list. This is where you will find your target market.
To give you a head start feel free to add friends from my list to yours by searching for jpnickethan. If you go too fast the system will ask you to come back later so go slowly. There are over 300 friends in my list and if you like you can add me as a friend too.
Finally Craigslist. Craigslist has a great page rank which is one of the reasons I like using it. I’ve received a ton of traffic from Craigslist and if you write your ad the same way as for ezines being keyword focused your ad may appear high in the search engines. I found this out by accident but it works. I’m getting traffic on ads that have expired on Craigslist because of the keywording.
Here’s a tip. Craigslist is in plain text format when you first write your ad. After submitting your ad go back into your account and click edit this ad. Now your ad will be in html format simply add snippets of html where you want them and you will have links to your business or website. Be sure to preview your changes and test the links. For those who are not html savvy here is an example of how to add a link on Craigslist.
your text link ex. click here you do not need the www. In front of your website url.
A few final tips: Write your articles, squids, and hubs on a word processor and save them to a file. Just in case something happens. Your ezine articles will be reviewed by a real person before going live to be sure that you have not violated the guidelines. But your resource box is all yours. Be sure to change the link in order to send your visitors to your new relevant hub or squid to keep the link popularity up. Schedule a time and day to implement these techniques. It seems like a lot but by being organized it will become daily routine. They don’t call it netWORK for nothing. There are other forms of attraction marketing techniques. These are the ones that I find to be the most effective.
